Welcome to the Study Skills component of the Foundation English Programme. This course is 
designed to help you build the essential skills you need to succeed at university and in your future 
studies.
In Semester 1, you will focus on the foundations of effective learning. You will learn how to:
➢ Manage your time and organise your studies.
➢ Take responsibility for your learning and meet deadlines.
➢ Work well in pairs and groups, showing respect for others.
➢ Use different study strategies and find out which learning style suits you best.
➢ Take effective notes and use reading strategies like skimming and scanning.
➢ Reflect on your progress in a journal and keep a vocabulary log.
➢ Collect your work in a portfolio as evidence of your learning.
This handout will guide you through activities, exercises, and tips each week. You will also 
complete tasks that will form part of your portfolio (10%), which is your main assessment for 
Semester 1.
